Training had been going so well. Every time I returned home, I felt like I’d spent hours on the battlefield – and won. I couldn’t help but be excited for the last tour, but that would never last long. Ellie filled up my mind like a drug, and I could pull away from it – from her.

My mind kept on feeding me these scenarios ever since this morning, her lies – the flashbacks… It felt like I was that same naïve man from all those years ago.

I limped up the stairs as my last form of cardio, deciding against the elevator. I blew out a breath on top of the stairs, only for it to be sucked right back in from the sight in front of me.

As if the universe was telling me that everything I needed to see right in front of me, Joshua stood in front of Ellie’s closed door where she leaned, her arms crossed against her chest. She giggled, her face red as if she’d been breathless, and she placed a hand against his chest as he leaned in to say something else – his grin forming widely against his face.

My footsteps faltered. The two were so lost in their own worlds, that they didn’t notice me trudging down the hallway.

Something about their interaction felt too comfortable, too familiar. A knot formed in my stomach as I thought about all the scenarios suddenly making sense. I stared at the grocery bags around her, and the rational part of me wanted to believe that he only came with her to carry the bags – but did he go shopping with her too? Did they drive around in comfort? And was he now going to get comfortable again in her apartment.

The sight was unsettling, my chest burning with a sense of anger that I hadn’t felt in so long. Maybe they weren’t together – maybe they just didn’t work out – or maybe they shared a child in a loveless experience.

She was very familiar with sleeping with someone under pretence before so I wouldn’t put it past her now.

And there she went. Lying right to my face. Making me believe whatever she came up with as if I was a thirsty horse and she held all the water.

Joshua noticed me as I drew closer, and his face hardened. Ellie turned to me, her eyes widening in shock, and then confusion. Joshua whispered something to her, before leaving, walking past me with his shoulders lightly grazing mine. I paused, and it took everything inside me not to yank him back by his collar and make his face one with the ground.

“Hayden,” Ellie said, and when I turned back toward her, she had a gentle smile on her face. “How was training?”

“Do you really think I’m stupid, Ellie?” I started, my voice trembling as I approached her.

Her face dropped at the tone of her voice. “What?”

“Joshua’s an amazing friend, but that’s all there is,” I mock, and her eyebrows raised into her forehead.
